Who We Are
During the early years, MMCWS organized welfare projects to provide assistance in kind to needy families and educational financial aid to deserving students of the underprivileged. In addition, the society also helped the community with citizenship applications, employment opportunities, scholarships, donations in cash and kind to the Cheras flood victims (1960s), Gombak fire victims (1970) and the National Disaster Relief Fund. Other activities included donation for the building at the Junior Seminary of Cardijin House and UM Students Welfare Fund, educational seminars for students and youths and health talks for senior citizens.
In the early days, most of the fund raising programmes were through dramas and variety shows with the help of Kairali Arts Club. Kairali Arts Club was a cultural movement which provided service to humanity through promotion of arts and culture. Both MMCWS and Kairali Arts Club worked in tandem during the 1990s.
As Malaysia progressed and developed, the Malaysian Catholics too developed economically. This prompted the members to convert the caring society to the status of an Association to be relevant to the challenging times and more significantly meet the aspirations of the community. Thus in 1996, MMCWS changed its name to Malaysia Malayalee Catholic Association (MMCA). The objective of MMCA is in line with the nation’s vision, which, helps to induce sustainable socio-economic progress for the community and help promote spiritual and cultural needs of its members.
